King County study shows some aluminum cookpots and pressure cookers may be source of lead exposure

Congratulations to King County’s Hazardous Waste Program for the publication of their unique research into potential lead exposure from some aluminum cookware. The study shows some aluminum cookpots and pressure cookers released enough lead under simulated conditions to present a serious health risk and expose people to lead, especially children. Researchers identified several solutions to prevent exposure including cooking alternatives, safer cooking and storage practices, and blood lead level testing in children. More information on lead and its effects on humans is available on the DOH and Public Health Seattle King County websites.
