Food additives guidance in works
DOH Office of Environmental Public Health Sciences staff are working on guidance for evaluating dietary supplements for use as food ingredients. Dietary supplements include vitamins, minerals, herbs, botanicals, amino acids, or any combination of ingredients that “increase the dietary intake.” Historically, the products have not been approved for use in food, but supplements are widely available and becoming more common in retail food establishments. Some, like cannabidiol (CBD), are prohibited in state or federal laws, but the majority of supplements have no express approval or prohibition and limited safety information of supplements is available for review.
