Rural and Critical Access Hospitals
We extend our deepest gratitude to all rural health providers and critical access hospital staff for your unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of the communities you serve. We recognize the vital role you play in delivering quality care, often in the most challenging circumstances.
This platform is here to support you with resources, funding opportunities, and best practices to help strengthen your efforts and overcome the unique challenges of rural healthcare. Our goal is to work together to ensure that rural communities have access to the care and services they need to thrive.
Washington Rural Hospitals
Washington state has six rural hospitals, 38 critical access hospitals, and one rural emergency hospital.
A critical access hospital (CAH) is a rural hospital maintaining no more than 25 acute care beds. CAHs must be located more than 35 miles, or 15 miles by mountainous terrain or secondary roads, from the nearest hospital, unless designated by a state as a Necessary Provider before 2006.
A rural emergency hospital (REH Code of Federal Regulations) is a rural hospital maintaining no more than 50 patient beds with an active rural reclassification as of December 27, 2020. REHs are required to provide 24-hour emergency services, laboratory services, diagnostic radiological services, pharmacy, or drug storage area, and discharge planning by or under the supervision of a registered nurse, social worker, or other qualified professional.
