Qualitative Fit Tester Training

How to Conduct a Qualitative Fit Test
The state Department of Health (DOH) has created training materials on how to meet Washington state rules (Chapter 296-842 WAC) when conducting qualitative fit testing for N95 masks. This e-module outlines the steps for conducting a valid qualitative fit test. This training is interactive, includes knowledge check questions throughout, and a quiz at the end. About this training module:
- It should take about an hour to complete.
- It is self-paced, and you can review and retake it as many times as needed.
- There is a certificate of completion available after passing the quiz for your personal records. There is no required certification to become a fit tester. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that fit testers are conducting valid fit tests as required by WAC 296-842-22010.
Before Taking the Training
As a fit tester, you will need to have a qualitative fit test kit to use at your facility. It is helpful, though not necessary, to have the kit before taking the training course because part of the course will go through types of fit test kits, their components, and how to use them. Review more information about choosing and purchasing fit test kits (PDF).
To benefit most from our training videos and modules, trainees should already know how respirators work, how to don and doff the N95, and understand their facility’s written respirator program and policies, and the facility's N95 worker training materials. This knowledge base helps the fit tester better understand respiratory protection, and be able answer questions the worker may have during fit testing. Visit the Respiratory Protection webpage on DOH's website for information on respirators, or go to the Qualitative Fit Tester Resources page on this site.
After Taking the Training
This training contains a quiz at the end. A score of 80% is required to pass and access the certificate of course completion. If you did not pass, we recommend you retake the course. After successfully completing the DOH Fit Tester Training, practice doing fit tests multiple times before you begin fit testing officially at your facility.
Have someone evaluate you while you perform a fit test. Use our checklist (PDF) to be sure you are doing it correctly.
NOTE: Remember there is no specific certification for learning how to conduct a fit test. Use the checklist to validate your skill to conduct a fit test according to the rules and regulations.
