Electronic Case Reporting: Transforming Public Health Surveillance in our state

Electronic case reporting (eCR) replaces antiquated manual reporting methods like faxing or mailing paper forms, using digital technology for automating disease reporting.

In late summer 2023, DOH’s eCR team is planning a soft launch of the eCR system in partnership with the University of Washington. This transition brings significant advantages to healthcare systems and the broader community, strengthening the overall public health infrastructure.

The soft launch will focus solely on COVID-19 diagnosis and aims to test and refine the system’s functionality. Subsequent phases will bring on more healthcare facilities. After healthcare facilities are fully onboarded for COVID-19, additional reportable conditions will be incorporated into the eCR system.

eCR is a crucial aspect of the Data Modernization Initiative and works in collaboration with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists, the Association of Public Health Laboratories, and state, local, and tribal public health agencies.

These changes mark a step forward in modernizing public health surveillance. Its benefits include faster disease detection, streamlined data collection, and the potential for more effective interventions. The soft launch is a pivotal milestone in realizing the full potential of eCR, paving the way for a healthier and safer future.
