Five organizations that are led by and serve Washington's Black/African American, African Immigrant, and American Indian/Alaska Native communities received Birth Equity Project funding to improve birth outcomes in their communities. Funds will support the provision of culturally responsive birthing services and help reduce the high infant and maternal mortality rates within these communities.

To support Washington communities with lower life expectancies, environmental concerns, and/or fewer doctors or medical facilities, the Washington State Department of Health has opened nominations for two funded, community-led projects across the state. The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) released its 2023 Maternal Mortality Review Report, uncovering the leading causes of pregnancy-related deaths. Behavioral health conditions led to almost one third of these deaths, highlighting the need to address the root causes and better support our birthing parents across Washington.
