About Our Work

The state Department of Health's Practice Transformation and Quality Improvement team supports joint Practice Improvement Projects (PIPs) between all 5 of the Medicaid Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) in Washington state. Washington’s MCOs:

  • Community Health Plan of Washington
  • Coordinated Care
  • Molina Healthcare
  • United Healthcare
  • Wellpoint

In partnership with the Health Care Authority we support the MCOs in collective quality improvement work in specific focus areas.

Current Areas of Focus:

  • Follow-Up After Hospitalization for Mental Illness: For patients ages 18 through 64 who have been discharged from inpatient care for a diagnosis of mental illness or intentional self-harm, assess how many receive follow-up care with a mental health provider within 7 days.
  • Health Equity PIP: Reduce the number of Apple Health (Medicaid) members at risk of losing housing and identify health equity gaps.

Previous Area of Focus:

  • Health Equity PIP (2022 – 2024): Addressing health equity gaps in the children's mental health services rate for BIPOC children and young adults ages 6 through 17.
  • Well-Child Visit PIP (2016 – 2023): Increasing well-child visit rates for children and young adults, ages 0 to 20 (21 for foster care) in the Medicaid population.
