Using Novel Data to Expand the Public Health Practice Toolbox Webinar to be held May 23

The next webinar in the Introduction to Public Health Data Science series is on Tuesday, May 23 from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. “Using Novel Data to Expand the Public Health Practice Toolbox” features speaker Eli Kern, MPH, Epidemiologist from Public Health – Seattle & King County.

Kern will describe the value of seeking out novel data—Medicaid data in this case—to address public health challenges. He will also identify a framework for finding novel data resources and discuss several use cases for leveraging novel data in public health work, with a focus on public health surveillance. Attendees will learn four key lessons to consider when implementing processes informed by novel data. Registration is now open.

Last month, more than 200 people from across the state attended the launch of the webinar series. Speakers Michelle Campbell, MSHI, Director for DOH’s Center for Data Modernization and Informatics, joined Stephen Elston, PhD, Principal Consultant for Quantia Analytics LLC, to share insights into the data science processes. A recording of this webinar is now available (YouTube).

The final webinar in the three-part series will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, June 12. DOH Senior Epidemiologist, Ian Painter, will share his experience and thoughts about COVID-19 predictive modeling.

The webinar series was developed in partnership between DOH and the University of Washington School of Public Health. All three webinars are intended as an introduction for those interested in data science. Learn more about these webinars at the Public Health Data Learning Center.
