Becoming an NHSC Site
Eligible Sites
- Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Certified Rural Health Clinics

- Provider-Based
- Independent
- Community Outpatient Facilities

- Hospital-Affiliated
- Non-Hospital-Affiliated
- State Prisons

- Must be medium or maximum security.
- Must have at least 250 inmates
- The ratio of the number of internees per year to the number of FTE primary care physicians serving the institution must be at least 100:1
- Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Treatment Facilities

- Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) - Certified Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs)
- Office-Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) Facilities
- Non-Opioid Outpatient SUD Treatment Facilities
- Other Eligible Site Types

Frequently Asked Questions
- When does the recertification application cycle open?
-
The recertification application cycle opened on August 19th and closes on September 30th.
- Who is the recertification application cycle for?
-
Your site would recertify during the recertification cycle if your site is coming up on the three-year application approval end date. The 2024 recertification cycle will focus on sites that are expiring on December 31st, 2024. If you have not received an email from the PCO about your upcoming expiration date, please reach out at pco@doh.wa.gov.
- How long is the application cycle?
-
During a typical cycle, sites have four to six weeks to submit their site application.
- How should my site prepare for the application?

- Review the site reference guide.
- Gather or create the required documentation that is outlined within the site reference guide.
- Create an account, or log in, to the Bureau of Health Workforce (BHW) portal.
- How will I know if my site has been approved?

NHSC will notify you through the BHW portal. Once approved, NHSC will also provide your site with information on posting open job positions on the Health Workforce Connector.
- Will my site approval expire?
-
Once approved by NHSC, your application is valid for three years, with the exception of eligible auto-approved sites. Your site must remain in a HPSA and continue to meet NHSC eligibility requirements and maintain compliance throughout the approval period.
- Why isn't my facility listed as a NHSC site?
-
- Your site may not be located in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA).
- Your site does not meet all of the NHSC requirements.
- Your site may not have submitted an NHSC site application.
- The site approval expired and has not been recertified.
